The Owens Corning Duration shingles on our re-roofs

Shingle Roofs · 5 min read ·

Owens Corning Duration is the architectural shingle on two of our 2026 re-roofs: gray on a June job and Onyx Black on an October one. Here is what that shingle looked like going on, and how the two colors turned out.

What an architectural shingle is

Architectural shingles, sometimes called dimensional or laminated shingles, are built in layers so the roof has depth and shadow instead of the flat look of older three-tab shingles. Duration is the Owens Corning line we used on two jobs this year.

They go on the same way any architectural shingle does: started at the eave, worked up the slope course by course, nailed through the strip, and finished with hip and ridge caps.

Gray Duration after a framing repair

In June 2026 we re-roofed an attached section on a house with white siding and a brick and block lower wall. The tear-off turned up rotted framing along the edge, which we rebuilt and sheathed before anything else.

Then GAF FeltBuster synthetic felt went over the deck, and the gray Duration shingles went on from the eave up with the bundles staged on the roof. The finished roof runs clean from eave to ridge above a white gutter. See the gray Duration job for the full set of photos.

Onyx Black on a white farmhouse

In October 2026 we replaced the shingled lower sections of a white-sided farmhouse whose main section has a red metal roof. The Duration bundles came in on a trailer, and the old roofing came off down to the deck.

Synthetic underlayment went down, the Onyx Black bundles were staged along the ridge (that is the hero photo), and the crew shingled up from the eaves. They cut in new valleys, flashed the skylight and capped every hip and ridge. The Onyx Black job page has the late-day finished shots with the countryside behind.

How the two colors read

Gray is the safe, neutral choice. Against white siding it looks clean and does not compete with brick or block. Onyx Black is darker and sharper; on a white farmhouse it outlines every hip and valley, and it sits comfortably next to the red metal on the main roof.

Brown is another option. Our June 2026 flashing detail job used brown Owens Corning architectural shingles, which suit tan or beige siding.

The shingle is one part of the roof

A good shingle on a bad deck is still a bad roof. On both Duration jobs, the deck work, underlayment, valleys and flashing took as much care as the shingles themselves. Our posts on what goes under new shingles and valleys and flashing cover those layers.

Questions

What are Owens Corning Duration shingles?

Owens Corning Duration shingles are an architectural shingle line, built in layers so the roof shows depth and shadow rather than a flat pattern. Schaub and Sons installed Duration shingles on two re-roofs in 2026: gray on a June job after a framing repair, and Onyx Black on an October job with new valleys and skylight flashing.

What does Onyx Black look like on a white house?

Onyx Black architectural shingles on a white house give a sharp, high-contrast look that outlines every hip, ridge and valley. Schaub and Sons installed Owens Corning Duration shingles in Onyx Black on the lower sections of a white-sided farmhouse in October 2026, and the dark roof sits well next to the red metal on the main section.

What goes under Duration shingles on a Schaub and Sons re-roof?

On Schaub and Sons re-roofs, Owens Corning Duration shingles go over a solid, repaired roof deck covered in synthetic underlayment. The June 2026 gray Duration job used GAF FeltBuster synthetic roofing felt after rotted framing was rebuilt. The October 2026 Onyx Black job used synthetic roofing underlayment over the stripped deck.

How do I choose a shingle color for my house?

Choosing a shingle color usually starts with the siding, trim and any brick or stone on the house. Gray suits white siding and masonry, Onyx Black gives strong contrast on white homes, and brown suits tan or beige siding. Schaub and Sons brings physical shingle samples to the site visit so colors can be compared in daylight.
