Picking a metal roof color for a farmhouse or outbuilding
Metal Roofs · 5 min read ·
Pick the color by how the building looks from the road and next to everything else on the property, not by a swatch held at arm's length. In 2026 we installed blue, red, black and gray metal, and each one did a different job.
Think about the view from across the field
A roof on a farm or a rural lot gets seen from a distance more than up close. Color that looks bold in your hand can look calm from the road, and a soft color can disappear against trees.
Our red outbuilding roof from September 2026 is the clearest example. The photo was taken on an overcast day from across the yard, past a tree and a wooden fence, and the red panels over white walls still stand out plainly.
Blue on a farmhouse
The blue farmhouse roof went on in spring 2026. Gray underlayment came first, then wood strapping in rows, then the blue panels one sheet at a time down the length of the roof.
From up on that roof there are open fields in every direction and other farm buildings with red and green roofs in view. Blue gave this house its own identity without clashing with any of them. If the neighbors' barns are red, a different color on the house can be a good way to set it apart.
Black, gray and red on houses
Two of our three metal-over-shingle houses this year stayed in the black-and-gray family. The black job went top to bottom in black ribbed panels with exposed screws. The gray one finished with matching gray ridge cap. Both read as quiet and tidy against brick chimneys and green yards.
The red job sat on an in-town lot with the street right below the eaves. Red is a strong choice in town, where the roof is part of the streetscape, and it pairs well with the white trim and siding common on older houses.
Caps and trim usually match the panels
On our 2026 jobs the ridge and hip caps matched the panel color: gray caps on the gray roof, red ridge and hip caps on the red one. Matching caps keep the roof reading as one color from the ground.
On pole buildings, people often go the other way and use a contrast trim color at corners and openings. Our note on wainscot, trim and color walks through those combinations for barns.
Screens are close; samples are final
The Design Studio lets you try roof colors on a model before you call. The colors on screen are close matches, which is plenty for narrowing it down to two or three.
The final pick happens with real samples at the site visit, held up against your siding, your trim and the other buildings on the property. Daylight changes everything, so we like to compare colors outside.
Questions
What color metal roof looks best on a farmhouse?
The best metal roof color for a farmhouse depends on the siding, the trim and the other buildings on the property. Schaub and Sons installed blue metal on a farmhouse in 2026, and it stands apart from the red and green roofs on farm buildings nearby. Red, black and gray are also common choices. Final colors are picked from real samples at the site visit.
Does a red metal roof look good on a white outbuilding?
A red metal roof over white walls is a classic combination for an outbuilding, and it stays easy to see from a distance. Schaub and Sons finished a red metal roof on a white-walled rural outbuilding in September 2026, and even on an overcast day the red panels read clearly from across the yard.
Should metal roof trim and ridge caps match the panel color?
On houses, metal roof ridge caps and hip caps usually match the panel color so the roof reads as one color from the ground. Schaub and Sons used gray ridge cap on a gray metal roof and red ridge and hip caps on a red metal roof in 2026. Pole barns often use a contrasting trim color instead.
Can I preview metal roof colors before talking to a contractor?
Yes. The Schaub and Sons Design Studio lets you preview metal roof colors online and choose whether the metal goes over existing shingles or after a tear-off, then send the design with a quote request. The on-screen colors are close matches, and the final color is chosen from physical samples during the site visit.
